Basin Recreation Trail Updates

This page describes a historic artifact in the history of OpenStreetMap. It does not reflect the current situation, but instead documents the historical concepts, issues, or ideas.

Basin Recreation Trail Updates is an import of 2025 BR Trails Summer 12N dataset which is of trail systems covering Snyderville Basin US. The import is currently (as of (March 14th, 2025)) no longer relevant as we have decided an import was not necessary.

Goals

Ensure that OSM data reflects accurate trail alignment and includes new trails managed by Basin Recreation(BR). Ensure that OSM data tags reflect accurate information.

Schedule

Feb 2025: Begin Planning, start data evaluation

March 2025 and onward: Convert tags to OSM tags, review necessary updates and additions for Basin Recreation official trail alignments.

Import Type

This project is comprised of a major data import and review project for 2025, sequentially followed by minor edits and updates as necessary with trail realignments or new trail building.

Data Import to occur with JOSM and the OSM community forum.

Data Preparation

Data Reduction & Simplification

The majority of the Basin Recreation trail system is currently mapped on OSM, therefore the majority of the project entails reviewing OSM data compared to BR trail data, and editing the OSM data to reflect the official trail alignment and data tags. New trails not currently reflected on OSM data will be added to the data upload for validation by the OSM community. The BasinRecreation_Trails_OSMData layer includes feature fields that match OSM tagging requirements, thereby making the data easy to review and correct by data editors as well as the OSM community.

Tagging Plans

The BasinRecreation_Trails_OSM layer attributes match OSM data tagging requirements. The layer's attribute table is open source and available for public viewing, to ensure that the public community can easily access trail regulations and edit the OSM data to reflect this information.

Data Transformation

Transformations will be manually implemented through the JOSM. Transformations will include editing of trails to reflect official alignments, editing of tags to reflect accurate regulations, and new trails that Basin Recreation has built more recently that are not reflected in OSM files at this time.

Data Merge Workflow

Team Approach

Project will be implemented by 4 Basin Recreation employees by referencing official trail data and alignments to ensure OSM data reflects our files. Team members will take responsibility for edits within the changesets defined under the Changeset size policy section. The project is additionally being posted to the OSM community forum, specifically sent to 2 community mappers within the Snyderville Basin region, with the goal of getting the community involved with the OSM data editing, review and validation process.

Workflow

JOSM Editing by Basin Recreation Team

1.     The BasinRecreation_Trails_OSMData file was created by Basin Recreation Trails and Open Space department, trail managers and trail builders. This file was created using GPS tracking devices and NAIP aerial imagery, in order to reflect the highest degree of accuracy of the official trail alignment for trails located in the Snyderville Basin, and managed by the Basin Recreation agency.

2.     JOSM is used to download OSM data.

3.     BasinRecreation_Trails_OSMData GPX file is loaded into JOSM.

4.     Basin Recreation Open Space team reviews all trails that do not match the official trail alignment and/or tagging information, and will edit the OSM dataset to match the BasinRecreation_Trails_OSMData file.

-         The Open Space team will split up the dataset for review by the following regions: Summit Park, Glenwild, East & West 224, East Basin.

-         All edits will be submitted as one Changeset called #basinrec, which covers the Snyderville Basin region of Summit County.

-         All edits will be uploaded after each editing session, every day or multiple times per day depending on the editors’ availability.

-         The BasinRecreation_Trails_OSMData file attribute table data contains the fields: Name, Surface, Access, Oneway, Seasonal, Food, Bicycle, mtb, and operator, which coordinate with OSM data tagging. The information reflected in the feature layer file will be transferred as tags into the OSM dataset edits.

-         The following tags will be added to all data edits: created_by=JOSM, source=GIS, review_requested=yes, hashtags=#basinrec, import:page= https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Basin_Recreation_Trail_Updates

-

5.     When Basin Recreation builds new trails:

-         The BasinRecreation_Trails_OSMData file will be corrected accordingly.

-         OSM data files will be added through JOSM.

-         Basin Recreation will reach out to the OSM community forum, and ask the community mappers to review our edits for validation.

6.     Revert plans include continual review of trail alignments by the Trails and Open Space managers. If incorrect trail alignments are found:

-         The BasinRecreation_Trails_OSMData file will be corrected accordingly.

-         OSM data files will be corrected through JOSM.

-         Basin Recreation will reach out to the OSM community forum, and ask the community mappers to review our edits for validation.

OSM Community Engagement for Verification

1.     Basin Recreation will share the BasinRecreation_Trails_OSMData file with the OSM community forum, and ask the community to help us review this dataset to correct misaligned trails and add new trails that are not currently on the map.

2.     We are reaching out via the OSM community forum to two local community mappers in the Snyderville Basin to aid with the dataset edit, review and validation process.

Changeset size policy

Changesets will be broken down into 4 regions of the Snyderville Basin for OSM data upload, named accordingly; Summit Park, Glenwild, East & West 224, East Basin..  All changesets will include hashtag=#basinrec.

Conflation

The BasinRecreation_Trails_OSMData file is considered highly accurate as this file was created using GPS data and NAIP aerial imagery, created by the trails and open space managers of Basin Recreation (the managing agency of said trails). This trail file should reflect official and accurate trail alignment and tagging information for trail regulations, with the exception of on-ground mappers discovering different on-ground trail alignment due to imperfections caused by human fallibility. Basin Recreation OSM mappers will be active within the OSM community forum to receive information via commentary from the OSM community, and will edit our trail data file to repair alignment inaccuracies within our data that are discovered by the OSM community. BR employees will ensure to collect on-ground GPS trail alignment data in the case that inaccuracies are reported by the public community.
