amenity=place_of_worship would be also mapped
Church building no longer used for religious purposes, converted into apartments. building:use=apartments building=church would be a correct tagging here

Three cases

  1. Built as a church, used as a church: building=church + [ amenity=place_of_worship + religion=christian ].
  2. Built as a church, used for something else or closed: building=church + tags for current use (see building:use=*)
  3. Built as something else, used for Christian worship: building=* + [ amenity=place_of_worship + religion=christian. E.g., warehouse building converted into place of worship.
