The key bicycle:designated can to used to specify the type of bicycle a path is designated for.
This can be useful for making to explicitly mark that a way is designated as path for a specific type of bicycle.
MTB specific paths
In the case of a mtb-specific highway=path with bicycle=designated (for example a path that was specifically designed, built and marked for bicycle-use) this can to avoid any doubt that this bicycle-specific path is not a regular cycleway (in the sense of way with a traffic_sign D, 4 as described in the Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals).
Such a path should normally not be tagged with mtb=designated or bicycle:type since this implies a legal distinction (use of an access-key) that normally does not exist: in the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic and most practical situations there is no distinction in access-rights between types of bicycles (say a MTB or a racing bicycle), also because such a distinction would be too vague to make in a legal sense.
