The use of this tag is strongly discouraged. There is no consensus on either the number of continents[1] or their boundaries[2]. The division of Earth's landmass is thus subjective and not verifiable.

Most, if not all, local mapping communities consider this tag as pointless and potentially even harmful. [ citation needed ]

As of 2020, the tag is proposed for deletion by JOSM validator.
