National Hydrography Dataset ftype classifies a section of waterway. Appearance in OSM is result of NHD imports.

Keeping this tag in OSM is dubious as it is a classification method of objects duplicating OSM classification. For example =StreamRiver on either waterway=stream or waterway=river is a pointless duplication. And =StreamRiver on anything except waterway=stream or waterway=river is confusing and also unnecessary.
