surface:colour=* describes the colour of the surface=* of an object. The values of the tag are described on the main page colour=*.

The tag is mostly used to describe the surface colour of highways and only very rarely on other objects. In many cases the shorter colour=* can be used as well because there is no need to distinguish between the colour of an object and the colour of its surface.

A special case is =rainbow, indicating that the surface is painted with multiple, coloured strips in a rainbow-pattern (often to support the LGBTQIA+-community).
