Motorways (autoroutes الطرق السيارة) are tagged with highway=motorway. Their ref=* starts with A.

Expressways

Expressways (voies express الطرق السريعة) are tagged with highway=trunk. They may be part of a larger national, regional or provincial road, but they don't have references per se. The ref=* always goes on the national/regional/provincial road relation.

RN National roads

National roads (routes nationales الطرق الوطنية) are tagged with highway=primary. Their ref=* starts with RN.
