A chave =* indica a direção afetada pela traffic_sign=* relativa a via highway=*. Ela é usada quando traffic_sign=* está node de uma via highway=*. Os valores possíveis são para frente and para trás:

The key =* has been introduced by the iD editor in September 2018 because the editor couldn't handle the keys traffic_sign:forward=* and traffic_sign:backward=*, which were already in use. It is unknown why the key direction=*, which was also already in use and has the same meaning as =*, wasn't used instead.
