This relation type groups together elements that are somehow related by a common identity.

This relation type was originally proposed as a generic solution for collecting the ways that make up a linear feature with a common name. However, this proposal was abandoned in favor of semantic relation types such as type=street, type=associatedStreet, type=route, and type=waterway. type=multilinestring later developed as a generic relation type, similar to the original proposal, for miscellaneous features. As of September 2023, only 13.6% of members of collection relations are highway=*, waterway=*, or railway=* ways as originally proposed.
