Use it to identify the location of a receptionist who is employed by an organization to receive or greet any visitors, patients, or clients and answer telephone calls. It is also called a front office desk or reception point. It is usually nearby a lobby where guests can wait, also called a public waiting area, lounge area, foyer, entrance hall or reception area (in context of weddings and other celebrations).
Status
The tag amenity= and 3 similar alternatives were rejected in 4 or 5 separate proposals: (proposal 1 & 2, proposal 3, proposal 4, proposal 5) due to several issues with the tag.
Despite these rejections, usage according to taginfo had reached a significant level. At the same time, because it was not documented before, editors started using random tags to tag the same thing, that is very destructive to OpenStreetMap. I propose that we unite instead of divide.
Most comments with the negative votes were questioning the exact naming of the tag, but not the concept, so a future proposal should address this issue. Mass renaming will be possible afterwards.
How to tag
Place a node
centrally at the location of the reception and tag it amenity=. Alternatively draw an area over the reception desks. Then consider annotating with:
reception_desk:for=visitors/delivery/...What kind of audience does this reception serve. Defaults to visitors, but larger facilities may have multiple receptions.level=*contact:*=*operator=*description=*opening_hours=*wheelchair=*
Alternative Tagging
camp_site=receptionproposed tag for the reception of a campground or campsitecaravan_site=receptionopening_hours:reception=*is used for the times the reception desk of an tourism accommodation (tourism=*), hospital, company or shop is open.
