A climbing area is understood to be a grouping of distinct crags that in the immediate vicinity of each other. Often an area will be delimited by a climbing guide book, where the OSM area will correspond to the area covered by the book. This might seem arbitrary, but never the less it matches closely with how climbers think about and use climbing related data in practice.

How to map

All of the crags within a climbing area are grouped into a site relation of type site=climbing and tagged with climbing=. Areas can be nested within parent areas, providing a convenient way to group crags, sectors, and smaller areas into bigger ones.

To optionally add additional information about the area, such as the climbing styles, see the Climbing styles, Grading, and Additional information sections in the main Climbing article.
