The tag protected_area= is used to tag parks which are natural, rather than manicured in character, and are predominantly used for public recreation. Such parks may contain significant public amenities while still maintaining a largely wild and/or natural landscape. These lands typically also serve a conservation purpose, however, the primary usage is recreation. State Parks in the United States may often fall into this category. These areas should also be coupled with protect_class=6 indicating a "sustainable use of natural resources" unless another values of protect_class=* has been assgined by an authoritative source.
Consider the following tagging for these areas:
boundary=protected_area

protect_class=6

|
name=*

protection_title=*

operator=*
