This feature has been labeled as deprecated. The recommended replacement is: service=driveway, service=parking_aisle, service=drive-through or service=alley or removal of service tag.
The reason is documented in Deprecated features. You are still free to continue to use or interpret this tag as you see fit since OpenStreetMap does not have “banned features”.
Under no circumstances should you (semi-)automatically change “deprecated” tags to something else in the database on a large scale without conforming to the automated edits code of conduct. Any such change will be reverted.

History

service= was first used in 2021 by a single mapper who disagreed with how service=driveway is defined. The tag was removed from the database in July 2023. It was invented in response to a dispute about whether service=driveway should be tagged on a wider variety of service roads, such as parking lot access roads. The tag was subsequently deprecated after an extended community discussion.
