Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, shortened as EMDR, is a form of therapy often used for post-traumatic stress disorder. In its simplest form, EMDR consists of focusing on memories while engaging in side-to-side eye movement or other bilateral stimulation. It was developed by Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s.

While major health organizations endorse the use of EMDR and it is considered safe, the exact efficacy of EMDR is not agreed upon in the scientific community. Many psychologists criticize it for merely being a "purple hat" (i.e., a placebo added to an already effective therapy) version of exposure therapy and that the theory behind the unique elements of it are pseudoscientific.[1]
