Acoma
Acoma is a young Pueblo boy of New Mexico noted by his people for his connection to the Kachina, spirits who act as intermediaries between mortals and the gods.
Overview
| “ | I will see if my spirit will heal your leg. I must ask first. Give me your knife and I shall bleed to attract Angak’s eyes to me. Then we will see if he can help you. | ” |
Believed to have connected to a healing spirit during his initiation rite at twelve years old, Acoma has since acted as a healer for his people, sacrificing his blood to cure various ailments or repair injury. The washing away of greater injuries requires a greater amount of Acoma's blood, to the point that healing a broken leg nearly bled the boy to death.
Though Acoma believes he has connected with Angak, a particular spirit of his people's mythology, in truth, he is followed on the other side by a wide variety of faith-, healing-, and joy-spirits who parasitize him for the Essence he sheds in his blood. In exchange for that Essence, they heal those around him. Acoma has only remained alive thus far because farther-sighted spirits have brought him back from the brink of death for the sake of future meals. Unfortunately, the rasher spirits are ever scheming for another high, and word of Acoma is spreading through the Shadow to more spirits.
