Amy Paige Haim

Amy Paige Haim is a patient of Dr. Preston Cates at the Bishopsgate Mental Asylum, having been institutionalized in late October, 2003.

Overview

You don’t know. You just don’t know. I wish I didn’t.

A rather average thirteen-year-old girl, Amy Haim, born to Barry and Joan Haim is in relatively good health and free of the self-harm common in most patients — with the exceptions of the names of the six saints on the doors of the hospitals having been carved into the tops of her thighs, which had appeared after she vanished for three weeks, reappearing in front of the gates with no memory of the intervening time.

Three years before her case file was written, her parents were brutally murdered, their blood being found on a shard of a broken mirror around which Amy was curled. She, however, had none of their blood on her clothing, skin, or under her fingernails, sparing the girl of criminal charges. Her only remaining family, her maternal grandparents, believe her to be guilty of their daughter’s murder.

Though remarkably well-adjusted, Haim does display self-consistent but atypical sleepwalking behaviors, in which she appears to be awake and fearful, arms extended forward as though pulled along. At times, she appears to be backpedaling while still moving forward. Attempts to wake her result in screaming and thrashing.

The book provides three optional explanations for Amy Haim’s place in a story:

  • Option One: A yet-uncaptured criminal broke into the Haim home and physically forced Amy to kill her parents and mutilate their bodies. This led to the girl's development of several disorders hindering her recovery, not the least of which being a rather hefty case of PTSD. There is nothing truly supernatural about her or the case; she is just the victim of a heinous crime.
  • Option Two: The Haims were sacrificed by a vampire cult for their rites. They baptized Amy in her parents' blood. They still visit the girl from time to time, watching from the windows. Amy noticed that they are repulsed by the saints at the door of the institution, so she carved their names into her legs to gain some form of protection.
  • Option Three: Amy Haim is marked by the Saints of Bishopsgate, the vessel of what little good is left in the place. The horrors of Bishopsgate cannot directly approach her and lack any power over her. She stays at the asylum to help those who are less protected.
