Divergence
The Divergence is the moment when a human becomes a Deviant as their soul breaks.
Overview
There are many ways of causing the Divergence, and the exact constellation of factors that trigger it is unpredictable. The same process that causes one person to be Remade may kill another, and two Deviants subjected to the same treatment may still end up with wildly different Variations. Some Progenitors do eventually achieve a method of triggering Divergence that works reliably and repeatedly, but such an accomplishment is built on a mountain of corpses.
It's not clear if breaking the Deviant's soul is what causes Variations to manifest, or if the Variations that emerge from the Divergence are what breaks the soul. Either way, a broken soul manifests as changes in the Deviant's psychology. They are filled with a restless drive to act; they externalize their pain and misery by lashing out; they develop a black-and-white, with-me-or-against-me worldview. Deviants struggle to form social bonds with others, but when they do, these quickly run to extremes of obsessive loyalty or violent hatred.
Instability is, in some ways, a measure of how badly damaged the Deviant's soul is. If the wound is allowed to fester, both Variations and Scars metastasize; eventually a point comes when the Deviant's twisted body can no longer function, and they die.
