Doppelgänger (CofD)

The Doppelgänger is an unknown being haunting the East Wing of Bishopsgate. It is currently being investigated by Matt Case, an intern working at the asylum.

Overview

Little has been definitively unearthed during Case's investigation bar that the creature is believed to drink the breath of the living, corroborated by seven different patients, none of whom are predisposed to visual hallucination of any kind, be it through illness or medication. The witnesses describe seeing the same being, though different individuals. In other words, the Doppelgänger made them see what they wanted to see, without actually taking on a fixed form. The being only attacks at night and only seems to attack those that cannot see it.

A number of explanations for the being and its powers are given, as follows:

  • Option One: The Doppelgänger is a vampire using the power of the Discipline known as Obfuscate. This allows it to appear as someone witnesses expect to see. Though the vampire only intends to feed, rather than kill, it has no qualms about doing so if it fears discovery. Naturally, this places Case at great risk.
  • Option Two: As Matt Case believes, the Doppelgänger is a ghost with the unique ability to change form by pulling images out of people's minds. It is barely self-aware, consuming by reflex the breath of those to whom it tries to speak.
  • Option Three: Charlene, Case's primary witness, is spinning a yarn and convinced the other patients to run with it. It is unknown what he will do if he discovers Charlene is deceiving him, since his continued place at Bishopsgate relies on finding an interesting story in the whole mess.
