A somber man found incompetent to stand trial for the murder of an unknown woman, Bennings claims that when he attacked "the beautiful lady" (from here, Jane Doe), his will was not his own. Even so, he was wracked with guilt, needing to be put on suicide watch. He had no prior history of violence, nor of abuse or drug use.
After admission to Bishopsgate, Bennings claims to have frequently been confronted by an individual he calls Higgins. According to Bennings's descriptions, Higgins's appearance has shifted several times, growing more grotesque as time goes on (e.g. gaining a hole in his stomach, a third eye on his neck, etc.). Higgins refuses to forgive Bennings, but also refuses to kill him.
In the sourcebook World of Darkness: Asylum, there are three sample options for the truth of the matter:
- Option One: Jane Doe was a Promethean, and the homicidal madness that gripped Bennings was late-stage Disquiet. Higgins, the Promethean who created her as part of his Pilgrimage, wishes for vengeance against Bennings, planning to torment him before murdering him. Higgins uses powers to protect him from the Disquiet, likely from the Disquietism abilities "Sooth Disquiet" or "Quell Disquiet", to avoid allowing him the "refuge".
- Option Two: Jane Doe was a demonic creature of some kind who took on the body of someone John Bennings knew. Able to recognize the change, Bennings burned the body the demon was wearing. Merely rendered incorporeal, the demon made a point of driving Bennings mad, and continues to taunt him from its new body, Higgins, in preparation for eventually killing and consuming him.
- Option Three: Bennings's madness was entirely natural. He is a paranoid schizophrenic who became obsessed with Jane Doe, a desperate homeless woman whom he wound up killing. He is unfortunately resistant to the drugs given to him, leading him to continue suffering from hallucinations.
