Overview
Born on a Navajo reservation in Arizona, Alicia Lopez was always into something. Neighbors knew she had Coyote in her, but didn't realize just how much. In truth, her mother had an affair with a local rascal without knowing he was Nuwisha, and little Alicia was the result. Her real father, who she knew as a good-natured friend of the family, took her for a ride in his pickup shortly after her 13th birthday and left her in the desert. As she made her way back, strange things happened to her. A tortoise spoke, telling her the story of how Coyote placed the stars. She tripped and fell on her face every mile or two, and it was always exactly the same rock tripping her up, as if it were somehow following her. When she tried carrying it, it simply disappeared at some point and she tripped over it again. Finally, her father appeared again, sitting under a cottonwood tree, and he told her the truth about herself and taught her how to change.
Since that time, she has become a true Nuwisha, having been initiated into the Umbral Dancers and joining the battle against the Wyrm in the spirit world. Like most Nuwisha, she lives mainly in the Umbra, though during the summers she works as an instructor at a wilderness skills school in the Escalante region of southern Utah. There she teaches humans the traditional ways of living on the Earth, according to Gaia's wishes, in the hope that they'll return to their homes with a new understanding of what is truly valuable in life.
