Oona Kinane

Dame Oona Kinane is an itinerant Seelie Boggan Wilder of House Dougal.

Overview

Oona is at first glance a typical-looking boggan. She’s on the short side, with wavy, light-brown hair, and a dimpled smile. She’s partial to stripes and waistcoats. Her manner is friendly and welcoming. None of this is an act, exactly, but still her true nature often comes as a surprise.

Oona hunts monsters.

When Oona was a little girl of about 7, she made a new best friend who lived next door. When Greg started coming into school looking tired and jumpy, she pressed him to find out why. Turned out, there was Something under his bed. Something that his parents didn’t see or believe. Something that wanted his heart.

Well, that wasn’t going to happen to her friend. So one night, she packed a bag with everything she thought she’d need, including her binkie and her policeman father’s nightstick. She crept over to Greg’s house and snuck in the back door that was never locked. When she got to Greg’s room, he was huddled in the middle of the bed, shaking, and she could see the Something reaching long fingers out from under the bed. She threw the binkie over what she hoped was its head, and battered it with the nightstick until it stopped moving. That night, Greg slept undisturbed.

Since then, Oona has gone from a childling menace to those smaller, ill-meaning Chimera, to a genuine threat as a wilder. In her fae mien, the skull pin on her jacket grows to a pauldron made from the skull of a true Nightmare, her biggest kill to-date. The collapsible nightstick in her bag of anything necessary grows into a massive two-handed sword almost taller than her.

The binkie is also still in the bag.

She has become somewhat of a wanderer, and acquired quite a few Kithain followers on social media who like to track her exploits as well as send requests for help from all over. Often seen in train stations and bus depots, she guards the restless sleep of travelers from nasty Somethings. It’s not even a bad living; her crafting skills produce valuable skins and trophies from her kills, and after one especially memorable showdown she was knighted by House Dougal in recognition of her talent for crafting tools to hunt dangerous chimera.

Although the satisfaction of helping and protecting is a powerful incentive, Oona’s Unseelie side still surfaces from time to time, and when it does she takes a great deal of pleasure in the hunt and being a monster’s monster. It’s just as well the bloodthirst is tied to the helpful busy soul of a boggan, or more than chimera would learn to fear her approach.
