Quest:Gallow's Hill

Gallow's Hill is a seasonal quest introduced in Bloodhunt's 0.5 patch. At the time of its release, this quest is unique from the other quests introduced in the game as it provides character cosmetics from each step as a reward instead of a Banner or Player Icon, and requires in-match challenges to be performed for most of its steps instead of the typical collection of objects. There are 9 parts to the quest, each introducing you to a different passage from a poem that tells the tale of three brothers.

Gallow's Hill Invitation

The formal introduction to the questline appeared on the Bloodhunt website as a letter from Custos to a colleague asking for their aid in solving the mystery of an old poem.

Esteemed colleague,

I hope this letter finds you well.

I have a mystery mission for you, which I believe will bring great rewards to the one able to solve it. I found this old poem tucked away between the pages of an old book of mine:

A father and his sons a story tell

Of greed and treasure waiting to be found

All three of sons were dragged down into hell

So prize can still be dug up from the ground

The curious, courageous one with skill

Who dares to fight the creatures of the night

Can find the treasure of the father’s will

Transform themselves with riches of delight

But every clue comes with a different quest

So make sure you are up for every test

I urge you to come to Prague at once to assist me in solving this! I’m afraid we have little time to act.

Hope to see you soon,

Custos

- A letter from Custos

Part 1 - The Dying Man

Custos: Prague truly is a city of legends and mystery. My favorite poem regarding this is the one called Gallow Hill. Some claim it is based on a true story, and I agree. In English, it goes something like this...

"When Prague was sacked by vicious Swede,

An old man fought three siblings’ greed.

He hid his fortune, short of breath.

“It all be yours upon my death.

But wait one year when arms been crossed,

And search as one or all be lost."

Objective: Survive for 45 Minutes.
Use wit and skill to survive in Prague.

For this part of the quest, you must simply survive in matches. This is cumulative and does not need to be performed in a single match.

Custos: Maia does an even better job at reading the poem than I. Enjoy her performance!

Part 2 - The Ugly Son

Maia: So Custos told you the first verse of Gallow Hill? I love this second one. What people do for love...

"The old man died, sons by his bed.

All three, his will seemed not have read.

The youngest son, foul and awry.

No one could love him, save a fly.

But with the treasure, he could pay

A girls to hold, he slipped away."

Quest Objective: Play 5 games as a Nosferatu.
Experience Prague through the eyes of a leper.

As the objective suggests, you must simply play 5 matches as a Nosferatu character. Both the Saboteur and Prowler archetypes are Nosferatu.

Part 3 - Mocked by a Guard

Maia: I once met a Nosferatu as vain as a Toreador. We call them Cleopatras. He did a good job covering the faults of his appearance, but he couldn't stand the idea of what others truly thought. I always think of him when I hear the third verse.

"He knew the spot, dug up the ground,

But fury rose with nothing found.

Full of despair, he called it off.

A guard appeared with mocking scoff.

The youngest hurt enough to kill

Secured a place at Gallow Hill."

Objective: Kill 10 Entity soldiers
Kill armed guards to lessen your pain.

For this step, you must kill 10 Entity soldiers, which can be found near the map symbol which indicates the presence of an Entity unit.

Entity Map Symbol

Maia: Kirill seems to enjoy the next two verses. It's the only part I've heard him recite, and always with the intention to mock one of us Roses.

Part 4 - The Self-Absorbed Son

Kirill: So Custos introduced you to that strange poem of his. Just a question of time. He thinks it might be based on a true story. Don't you think I would know about the events in that case?

"The second son was no one’s pawn,

He thought himself a graceful swan.

His brother gone, he did not care.

Most likely hiding in his lair.

His hollow mind then shone a light.

Would not be tricked, mine is the night."

Quest Objective: Play 5 games as a Toreador.

Experience Prague through the eyes of a diva.

As stated in the quest objective, you need simply play 5 matches as a Toreador character. Both the Siren and the Muse archetypes are Toreador.

Part 5 - Stolen Goods

Kirill: I think the poem describes the qualities of most Toreador in a good way. Self-absorbed, stupid, and greedy. Just joking! Or am I? Let's see if I can remember the rest correctly.

"He found the hole and thought, 'that snake,

The treasure found! What did he take?

With urge for jewels, formed a plan.

Stole gems from wealthy clergyman.

Soon he was caught, lost in the thrill.

He too was brought to Gallow Hill."

Quest Objective: Drain 40 resonant civilians

Rob mortals of their dearest possession.

This quest requires that you feed from 40 people with resonant blood. You can determine this by using the 'Heightened Senses' ability to highlight who has resonant blood, and what type it is. Despite having limited slots to stack buffs from resonance in a match, you can continue to feed off of any you come across in the match and it will count towards progressing the quest.

Kirill: That is all I care to remember. Go bother Omnis or someone with more time on their hands if you want to know the rest.

Part 6 - The Resentful Son

Omnis: I hear you have encountered the poem Gallow Hill. Omnis has assisted Custos in investigating its origins. It is intriguing. Does it not imply a Kindred layer to it?

"The third son still at mourning stage

Though often calm, now filled with rage

'The others left while still in grief.

Their pledge and love were rather brief.'

He kissed his dad, blew out the door.

The gentle son soon was no more."

Quest Objective: Play 5 games as a Brujah

Experience Prague through the eyes of a rebel.

As the objective states, play 5 matches as a Brujah character. Both the Brute and the Vandal archetypes are Brujah.

Part 7 - The Beast Unleashed

Omnis: To my ears the following part appears to be about the Brujah, Gangrel, or even werewolves.

"He found the place and brothers’ scent.

His mind and soul there underwent

A transformation. More a best,

His stomach called for human feast.

Four peasants slaughtered by the mill.

Caught, dragged through town to Gallow Hill."

Quest Objective: Diablerize 2 Kindred

Kill Kindred in the most gruesome of ways to satisfy your Beast.

Omnis: Omnis knows how it ends but is positive Custos would like to tell the end himself.

Part 8 - Reunited

Custos: I appreciate that the others have grown as fond of this legend as I have. The final verse is often considered to be as follows.

"And what about the buried wealth?

By fairies hid through guile and stealth.

The treasure lost until the night

The fairies end the three sons’ plight.

Unfavoured one who find the chest

The curse now found a different nest."

Quest Objective: Play 10 Group Games

Embrace the time you have left with others.

This is another straight forward one. Simply use the group queue to play 10 games teamed up with other players to complete this step.

Custos: It speaks to me. It very much does.

Part 9 - Trick or Treat?

There is no conversation prompt for this quest. You will simply find that there is a final part if you look in your quest log that directs you to locate the chest from the poem.

Quest Text: There might be some truth to the poem after all

Quest Objective: Find the Old Man's Chest in Prague.

Locate the chest with the treasure to lift the curse.

The chest is located inside a mausoleum on the west end of the Graveyard. The quest will be marked with the quest icon on the map used in other quests, but this time you will see an actual chest that you must interact with to complete the quest.

Quest Objective Icon

Custos: You found a wooden chest? How... curious. You see, as I searched for the origins of this poem, I stumbled upon a forgotten epilogue of sorts.

"Rejoined as in an awful dream,

All three under the wooden beam.

Nooses tightened, fingers snapped.

One last sigh, then life was wrapped.

But not yet done, or so some claim

Stuck in the night, in lasting shame."

Custos: I'm quite sure there is nothing to this last part, though. You will be fine. Yet, if not, please tell me.

Trivia

  • Despite how it's presented, the passage of the poem recited in Part 8 appears to be the "Epilogue" that Custos refers to after completing Part 9. Both the flow of the poems story, and the comments he makes after finishing the quest allude to the treasure being cursed and his concerns for your safety which directly correlates to Part 8's passage being the end. This is further supported by the Quest entry in the menu for Part 8 using the text from the so-called Epilogue instead of what Kirill recites in the conversation text.
  • Despite the Challenge menu UI and the Bloodhunt website referring to the quest as "Gallow's Hill", all NPCs and the poem itself refer to the poems title and the place it describes within as being "Gallow Hill".
