Raúl Cañedo
Raúl Cañedo is a mortal hunter not associated with the Second Inquisition. Hailing from a Mexican family, he's both tough and astute man in his mid-twenties. Raúl is also a capable investigator with significant fighting skills. Provided that he survives both his encounter with Modian and the Courier's urge to either drain him or turn him over to the Camarilla, Raúl can become the Courier's retainer.
Overview
The Courier first meets Raúl on November 2 in an abandoned gas station, in which the Courier found shelter after their CR-X broke down in the middle of the road. Raúl, alongside his family, broke into the said gas station in search of supplies. There, a younger woman, either Raúl's sister or cousin, inadvertently released a Nosferatu wight named Modian out of locked bathroom. Modian immediately killed the woman, and then turned on Raúl and his remaining family members.
Depending on the Courier's actions, Raúl may either be killed by the Wight, Modian, killed by the Courier alongside his family, or the Courier can either fend the Wight off or even kill it.
If Raúl survives, his family will gather their belongings and head north. Some time later (a few days at least) Raúl will end up in Camp Scheffler, where he will learn of the vampires and self-appoint himself as a "monster hunter". He'll break free, get his guard's lanyard and then make an attempt to stage a prison break. If the Courier will ask around the camp about Raúl (who they refer to as "the man from the abandoned gas station") and/or make an attempt to help the prisoners, Raúl will approach the Courier and ask for their help. Should the Courier agree, he'll approach them again shortly after the Courier talks to Elin Olivecrona, and together they'll take down a group of Olivecrona's most loyal minions, thus securing Raúl's attempts at freeing as many people as possible.
Provided that the prison break in Camp Scheffler ended up successfully, the Courier can later visit Raúl in his apartment in Tucson. Raúl, discouraged to join the SI after the carnage they wrought at the camp (the prisoners were labeled as potentially infected and shot on sight, their bodies burnt), will make an attempt to hunt monsters by himself. He gathered information about Edouard, a criminal fixer and a Minister, in an attempt to rescue the people from Camp Scheffler Edouard had been capturing, but after Edouard's ghouls beat him up, Raúl came to realisation that he would not be able to do it by himself. And so he'd propose a deal: if the Courier would help Raúl to defeat Edouard and save the captured people (or, at least, find out what's happening to them), Raúl in turn becomes the Courier's ghoul.
Trivia
- Owns a 67' Impala - and keeps an entire arsenal in its trunk.
- Once rubbed the said trunk with garlic - just to see his regnant's reaction to it.
- His weapon of choice is a Smith & Wesson Model 686 .357 Magnum.
- Is fond of cloak-and-dagger stuff.
- Plays the guitar and likes to dance.
- Making Raúl their ghoul at some point can make the Courier $5,000 richer.
- There'd be a moment when Raúl mentions to the Courier that he attempts to "flush out" a Bone Gnawer - to which the Courier would falsely assume he's referring to a Cainite of Nagaraja bloodline (and they've a hard time believing such bloodline even exists).
- Is not particularly fond of being anywhere near Alexander (Prince Lettow's most trusted retainer).
- Speaks almost without an accent.
- Got mistaken for "an international assassin" once.
- If the Courier made Raúl their ghoul before delivering a message to Pattermuster, it makes the entire St. Basil run slightly more (morally) challenging: since he's a hunter, Raúl holds no warm feelings towards either the "scabby freaks" (as he calls Caitiff, thin-bloods and other vampiric residents of St. Basil) or Pattermuster himself (and not because the latter threw a slab door at him), and he will vote for the Courier to let the renovation program of St. Basil proceed without interruption (as opposed to Pattermuster's intentions) (if the Courier would still choose to thwart the renovations, Raúl makes no comment on that and takes off to deal with some "human on human violence" in the city).
- Making Raúl approach the Courier can be a little tricky, since "doing something for the prisoners" means that the Courier would have to cut through the section of fence - and not triggering neither alarms nor electrified parts requires an [INT + Clandestine] check (if the Courier simply arranges the stashes in the desert nearby ([INT + Survival]), that just won't do). Also, the outcome of this particular option is irrelevant: even if the Courier fails the check, Raúl would approach them regardless.
- Raúl became romanceable in the later updates.
- Developed a habit of asking random people whether they've seen any werewolves.
- Is (reasonably) concerned about him being involved in shadowwalking.
