Sanctum (MTAs)

A Sanctum (or the Technocrat equivalent, Laboratory) is a place where a Mage can hone their craft in relative safety. The form of the Sanctum will likely mirror the paradigm of the user such that it may look like a herb garden, meditation chamber, mad scientist’s laboratory, a stone circle, or any of hundreds of other forms. Sanctums are generally not Horizon Realms or Chantries.

Benefits

A Sanctum generally has the following benefits:

  • Privacy
  • Stock of magick supplies
  • A cloaking effect similar to Arcane
  • Coincidental magick if the effect fits the paradigm
  • Rival paradigms automatically vulgar
  • Possibly lower Gauntlet ratings

Version Differences

The 1e Book of Shadows provided a significant reduction of difficulty with each point in the Background reducing difficulty by 1 (beyond the first point making it coincidental). This fit with a 1e theme of mages being exceptionally potent in their places of power. Nodes in 1e also offered significant reductions in difficulty vs future editions.

As of M20, the background only reduces difficulty beyond coincidental on rituals and each point in the Background costs twice as much.
