Taxonomic notes

Montes et al. (2019 & 2022) suggest that P. californiarum should be treated as a separate species from P. monophylla and support recognizing P. fallax as a species rather than as an infraspecific taxon of P. monophylla or P. edulis. However, both species names are problematic under ICN. Govaerts et al. (2023) and Farjon (2010) do not recognise the subspecies.
