δισεκατομμύριο

Greek

Etymology

Calque of French billion which explains the wrong bi- as δίς (dís, twice, two) + million as εκατομμύριο (ekatommýrio) (two million). The correct number is χίλια (chília, a thousand) million. Attested in 1871. Compare to the ancient δισχίλιος (diskhílios, two thousand) and δισμύριος (dismúrios, twenty thousand (twice ten thousand)).[1][2]
