върпина

Bulgarian

Etymology

Probably a derivative from an obsolete verb *върпя (*vǎrpja) + -ина (-ina), from Proto-Slavic *vьrpati, *vьrpiti. Akin to dialectal Slovene vŕpati (to turn, to grab, to ditch), dialectal Russian верпе́ть (verpétʹ, to spring). Also probably related to Proto-Slavic *vorpъ > dialectal Russian вороп (vorop, assault, attack, raid), Czech vrapa (wrinkle) and possibly further akin with Lithuanian ver̃pti (to spin).
