The origin of this word is disputed. May be related to Finnish kaura, Serbo-Croatian кврга, Turkish gevrek or Norwegian kavring. Known from written sources from the 12th century. Has cognates as e.g. Bulgarian ковриг (kovrig) and Romanian covrig.
