CYRILLIC LETTER PALOCHKA
ҿ
[U+04BF]
Cyrillic Ӂ
[U+04C1]

Translingual

Etymology

From Arabic aleph, ا. The Cyrillic form was originally the Roman numeral that was furnished on most Russian manual typewriters. The Roman I key did double duty for the Hindu-Arabic digit 1.

Letter

Ӏ (lower case ӏ)

  1. A letter of the Cyrillic script, called palochka.

Usage notes

Often the capital Roman numeral or the Hindu-Arabic digit 1 is used instead of the Unicode palochka. For some languages, such as Chechen, national keyboards do not include a key specifically for a palochka, and so the Roman numeral or the digit is in standard use.
