From Proto-Turkic *kïĺ-lāg,[1] from *kïĺ (“winter”).[2] Cognates with Turkish kışlık, kışlak, kışla, Azerbaijani qışlaq, Southern Altai кышту (kïštu, “wintering”), Karakhanid قِشْلاغْ (qıšlaɣ), Old Turkic 𐰴𐰃𐰽𐰞𐰍 (qis¹l¹ǧ).
