Borrowed from Classical Persian نیلوفر (nīlūfar, “lotus, water-lily”), from Middle Persian [script needed] (nylwpl /nīlōpal/), from Sanskrit নীলোৎপল (nīlotpala, “blue lotus”), a compound of নীল (nīla, “blue”) + উৎপল (utpala, “lotus”). Compare Hindi नीलोफ़र (nīlofar).
