No etymology according to Beekes. The Diccionario Griego-Español proposes a derivation from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰelh₃- (yellow), through Thracian, and subsequently influenced by the unrelated verb ἀγάλλομαι (agállomai, to be proud, exult in).
