From the 連(れん)用(よう)形(けい) (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb くじる (“to stick into something and open it up, such as a knot or a hole”)..

As a standalone noun, first cited to the 和名類聚抄 (Wamyō Ruijushō) of 934.[1]
