Etymology
From 目 (ma-, “eye”, archaic bound form) + な (na, archaic possessive particle) + 尻 (shiri, “end; rear”), in reference to the outward corner as further back from the front of the face. The shiri changes to jiri as an instance of rendaku (連濁). Compare synonym 目尻 (mejiri).[1][2][3][4][5][6]
