Etymology
In the original context of the Gongyang as exegesis of the Chunqiu, the character 大 (dà) was typically used as a verb meaning "to magnify; to aggrandize; to praise", as in the following passage:
- 「元年春王正月。」……何言乎王正月?大一統也。 [Classical Chinese, trad.]
- From: Commentary of Gongyang, c. 206 BCE– 9 CE
- “yuánnián chūn wáng zhēngyuè.”...... Hé yán hū wáng zhēngyuè? Dà yītǒng yě. [Pinyin]
- (It is written) "Year One, spring, The King's First Month." … What is meant by the very mentioning of "The King's First Month"? To magnify Unity.
「元年春王正月。」……何言乎王正月?大一统也。 [Classical Chinese, simp.]
