From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *g-zik (“leopard”). Cognate with Tibetan གཟིག (gzig), Burmese သစ် (sac, “leopard”), Zhaba ʑe⁵⁵ mei⁵⁵ (“leopard/panther”), Northern Qiang [script needed] (sə), Chepang [script needed] (jaʔ).
