Bäurin

German

Etymology

From Bauer + -in. The form Bäurin is the etymologically correct one as Bauer comes from Middle High German būr, būre, and its -e- is only a gliding sound to be deleted before vocalic suffixes. However, the form Bäuerin is now clearly predominant by analogy with nouns in the agent suffix -er.

Noun

Bäurin f (genitive Bäurin, plural Bäurinnen)

  1. Alternative form of Bäuerin, the female equivalent of Bauer.
