First attested as bosingum in 1260. Borrowed from West Frisian Boazum, derived in turn from a contracted compound of Old Frisian Bose (“a personal name”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ingi- and hēm (“home, settlement”). Compare Boesingheliede.
