Proto-West Germanic
Etymology
From Proto-Germanic *struppōną, from earlier paradigm *struppōþi ~ *strubunanþi, from pre-Proto-Germanic *sturbʰ-nā́-ti ~ *sturbʰ-un-ánti with liquid metathesis, from Proto-Indo-European *strebʰ- (“to twist, turn”). Cognate with Ancient Greek στρέφω (stréphō, “to turn”).
