From Old Galician-Portuguese Vaasquez, from an earlier Velasco + -ez.[1] Velasco and Belasco are Romance forms of a name in a pre-Roman substrate of Iberia (probably Iberian [Term?] or Basque [Term?]). Doublet of Velázquez, Blázquez, and Valesco.
