From Middle High German *jiuwezen, *jiuchezen, variants with umlaut (as also in German ächzen) of Middle High German jūwezen, jūchezen, derived from the interjection jū, jūch (“yahoo!, woohoo!”). Cognate with German jauchzen, juchzen.
