From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *gaːr ~ *ga (“to dance; to sing; to leap; to stride”). Cognate with Burmese က (ka., “dance”), Tibetan གར (gar, “dance”), Old Chinese 歌 (OC *kaːl), Situ ta-rga (“dance”) and Jingpho ka (“dance”). Compare with Lhao Vo go: , Zaiwa go and Hpon gà’.
