Голандия

Pannonian Rusyn

Etymology

Borrowed from Serbo-Croatian Холандија / Holandija, ultimately from Dutch Holland, from Old Dutch holt lant.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [ɦɔlanˈdija]
  • Rhymes: -ija
  • Hyphenation: Го‧лан‧дия

Proper noun

Голандия (Holandijaf (related adjective голандски)

  1. Holland (a traditional region of the Netherlands formed by two modern provinces, North Holland and South Holland)
  2. (Serbia) Netherlands (the main constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, located primarily in Western Europe bordering Germany and Belgium)
  3. (Serbia) Netherlands (a country in Western Europe, consisting of four constituent countries: the Netherlands per se, Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten the Kingdom of the Netherlands)

Usage notes

  • The term used to refer to the Netherlands in Croatian Pannonian Rusyn is not known. As a calque of Serbo-Croatian Низоземска / Nizozemska, the expected form would be *Нїзкожемска (*Njizkožemska), or *Нїзожемска (*Njizožemska) based further on the Czech etymon, however this is not attested in writing. It is also possible that Croatian Pannonian Rusyn borrows Низоземска (Nizozemska) directly from Serbo-Croatian, however it is not known whether that is the case as existing Croatian Pannonian Rusyn texts do not mention the Netherlands in general.
