Usage notes
In the 2010's, "Мордор" became a slang word used by opponents of Putin's administration and Ukrainians to refer to Russia. Later in 2022, Russian military personnel became known as орк (ork), comparing them to the monstrous soldiers of Mordor. It is also used by some Russians who oppose Putin to refer to their own country, especially to point out corruption or abuse.
