- from Ancient Greek ῥοῦς (rhoûs)
- from Proto-Slavic *rusъ (“red”), having had a semantically similar name to that of the medieval fortress Червен, as the two cities were economically connected
- from Proto-Slavic *rusъ (“blonde, red-haired”)
- from Latin russus (“red”)
