Likely from Proto-Finno-Ugric *aŋta- (“to open”). Compare Finnish avata, Livonian ovātõ, Northern Mansi [script needed] (āŋkwi, “to open, to take off, to skin”) (both from *aŋa-).
Moksha афтомс (aftoms, “to set a trap, to cast a net”) may be from the Uralic root *ëkta- (“to hang up, to set up a trap”).
