запикивать

Russian

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [zɐˈpʲikʲɪvətʲ]

Verb

запи́кивать • (zapíkivatʹimpf

  1. to bleep out inappopriate words (most often expletive words) by using a bleep censor over them (usually a 1000 Hz tone sound)

Usage notes

  • Commomnly used in colloquial speech, as the use of the bleep censor for censoring out expletive words on the television and radio broadcasting in Russia and post-Soviet states has been a very common thing since the early 1990s as well as the noun запи́кивание. Since April 2013, the use of expletive words in Russian mass media has been prohibited by national law, and as a result, Russian mass media now have to censor them out from audio and video before being broadcast.
