каракатица
Russian
Alternative forms
- корока́тица (korokática) – Pre-reform orthography (1956)
Etymology
Derived from Proto-Slavic *korkъ (“limb”) with the suffixes -атый (-atyj, “-provided”) and -ица (-ica, “feminine suffix”), thus roughly meaning the legged one. The form корока́тица (korokática) would thus be the etymologically correct one, but the most used one is карака́тица (karakática), influenced by кара- (kara-, “(from Turkish) black”).
