Etymology

Derived from Proto-Slavic *korkъ (limb) with the suffixes -атый (-atyj, -provided) and -ица (-ica, feminine suffix), thus roughly meaning the legged one. The form корока́тица (korokática) would thus be the etymologically correct one, but the most used one is карака́тица (karakática), influenced by кара- (kara-, (from Turkish) black).
