Attested 1717. Inherited from Old East Slavic [Term?], from Old East Slavic лѧкати (lękati, to bend, to make crooked), ultimately from Proto-Slavic *lękъ (bent). Cognate with Belarusian ляка́ла (ljakála). For sense development, compare Polish krzywik (French curve) < Polish krzywić (to bend).
