Attested 1717. Inherited from Old East Slavic [Term?], from Old East Slavic лѧкати (lękati, “to bend, to make crooked”), ultimately from Proto-Slavic *lękъ (“bent”). Cognate with Belarusian ляка́ла (ljakála). For sense development, compare Polish krzywik (“French curve”) < Polish krzywić (“to bend”).
