First attested in c. 1075‒1100. Inherited from Proto-Slavic *ȍlkъtь, from *olkъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *alk-, from Proto-Indo-European *Heh₃l-. Cognate with Old East Slavic локъть (lokŭtĭ), Old Ruthenian ло́коть (lókotʹ), Old Church Slavonic лакъть / ⰾⰰⰽⱏⱅⱐ (lakŭtĭ), Old Polish łokieć, Old Czech loket.
